As 2009 also marks the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, it seemed particularly appropriate to dedicate my mayoral office in 2009-2010 to international humanitarian law. The 1949 Geneva Conventions, a cornerstone of humanitarian law, are intended to protect populations caught up in armed conflicts or suffering occupation.
